Drama

The Drama department provides a warm and friendly environment where students are encouraged to be imaginative, innovative and reflective. Lessons are focused around topics relevant to their lives and the world around them. Students have the opportunity to explore issues in a safe environment. When exploring a character, lessons will often require students to pause and reflect by ‘putting themselves in someone else’s shoes’. During Year 7 students will develop their performance skills and their appreciation of Drama as an art form. They are introduced to different dramatic techniques that can be used to help them structure their work and communicate their ideas to an audience. However, alongside this, lessons very much focus on building an individual’s self-confidence, communication skills and ability to lead and co-operate with others.

There are a range of exciting extra-curricular opportunities for students to take part in. The department regularly organise theatre trips so students can watch different styles of performance and experience live theatre as an audience member. There is also a large scale whole school production every year. This is always a popular opportunity for Year 7 students. They will get the chance to work alongside others from across the key stages to take on a performance or backstage role.

ICT

The IT and Computer Science department at Charles Darwin school wants students to be independent and confident users of technology.

In year 7 you will explore the range of cloud computing services and apps that are available for them to use, computer science concepts such as computer components, computational thinking, and basic programming techniques. Whilst we encourage and support the use of technology, we will educate our young digital explorers to be digitally safety aware through a range of e-safety activities and discussions. We are always updating extra-curricular opportunities for students to develop more programming skills on small projects and equipment such as BBC Micro-Bits.

“So far I have found IT enjoyable because in my primary school we did not really do IT. Also the IT teachers have taught us how to use office365 and Microsoft TEAMS for our homework.”  James/Year 7

Dance

Dancers at Charles Darwin are very fortunate to have a dance studio with mirrors and ballet barres.  Students can audition to be in the dance company ‘Thrive’ where they rehearse weekly with a Step Into Dance teacher from the Royal Academy of Dance. The company competes and performs at various venues, some previously being the Southbank Centre and Copperbox Arena. An annual dance competition is held in February, where students choreograph their own dances and compete for the KS3 and KS4/5 cups. A core dance group are also used within the whole school production, last year being Legally Blonde.

History

Welcome to History. As a department we love teaching students a wealth of historical knowledge. Pupils always look forward to our engaging lessons that provide a supportive environment to students. History is challenging, it’s an evaluation of evidence as well as concluding with our own judgement.  We aspire to make all students fall in love with their historical learning from year 7 to GCSE.  In history in year 7 you will learn to investigate evidence, analysis, factors, cause, consequence, change and continuity.  We also believe the ‘more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future’

Maths

In year 7 students will develop an understanding required for a successful future as well as developing enjoyment in solving problems and an appreciation for its creativity through building confidence in their own skills. Students who are comfortable and confident with mathematics are able to develop critical thinking skills enabling them to effectively problem-solve and solution-find.

In this way we hope to continue to inspire our pupils; helping them to develop confidence in and a positive attitude towards mathematics; and to recognise the importance of mathematics in their own lives and to society.

English

The Charles Darwin English Department aims to develop in students the key concept that, in everything that they do, language transmits meanings and these meanings can be subtle, nuanced and complex. Year 7 is the start of that journey, where we foster and help to develop a love of reading and of story in a supportive, warm and nurturing environment, allowing students of all abilities to blossom and achieve their potential but also to love reading. In Year 7 students will study a range of texts from different periods and genres but will also have a dedicated weekly reading lesson in the library.

“English has helped me develop my vocabulary but also helped me view life events from different perspectives”  Maddie

“My English lessons have not only hugely expanded my knowledge, they have also made me realise how passionately I feel about the subject” Jake

Science

Science is how the world goes around. Or rather, it’s the study of how the world goes around. Whether it is small like cells or large like galaxies, through observation and experiment, Science aims to explain the unexplainable. With this view we also aim, at Darwin, to ensure our science is fun! The move from KS2 to KS3 introduces real practical investigative science, be it using microscopes to observe cells, dissecting organs, reacting elements to see new compounds being formed or using experimentation to describe forces. Our year 7 programme introduces all the big ideas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics to give our pupils the desire and excitement which lights their interest in such an exciting subject.

Year 7 quotes from the first 4 weeks.

“Science is a great subject. I like doing experiments. We recently distilled salt water and pure water over a roaring blue Bunsen flame. The  salt water left behind a white substance but the pure water left nothing.”

“Science lessons are amazing at Charles  Darwin School. They are fun and exciting. The teachers are really nice. I would give science 5 stars!”

Having the opportunity to draw, design, model and make in a practical lesson that for many will become a favourite. Learning to use a range of tools and equipment safely with various materials provides one of the only moments for practical activities which includes Food lessons where we will teach the basics of nutrition and working in the kitchen.

DT teaches pupils essential life skills for all and provides a platform for further education and careers in creative, practical and an interesting variety of jobs from the trades to Design, Architecture and Engineering.  Students will also take part in Food Technology lessons throughout year 7, learning to cook and manage food safely….a real life skill.

Art & Textiles

The Art and Textiles department is an exciting environment where students are invited to take risks with their work, be resourceful and explore. Year 7's are welcomed to the department where they build their understanding through contemporary and traditional techniques in a themed project. Students experiment with many different art materials and styles including paint, drawing, clay and printing. As the students advance through school their work progresses in scale, materials and techniques. Students develop their work independently, exploring their skills as artists whilst studying the work of others'.

We aim to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art and thrive in the creative industries.

‘I love the freedom you get when doing textiles work. You can pick your own artists that inspire you’
‘I really enjoy Art because it gives me the ability to explore my creativity and have fun.’
